Lightning in a Bottle
Lightning-related homeowners claims fell

Lightning-related homeowners insurance claims in the U.S. fell sharply in 2024, totaling $1.04 billion in payouts—a 16.5% decrease from 2023, according to the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I). The number of claims also dropped 21.5% year over year to 55,537, marking the lowest volume since before 2017.
Florida led the nation in lightning claims, followed by Texas and California. While the national average cost per claim was $18,641, Texas saw the highest average at $38,558. Ground surges—electrical currents from lightning strikes—accounted for nearly half of all reported damage, often harming appliances and home infrastructure.
Experts attribute the decline in claims to increased awareness and better mitigation strategies, though lightning remains a significant and costly threat. As storm seasons intensify, homeowners in high-risk areas are encouraged to invest in protective measures.
