Weather Disasters in 2017
According to an article in The Standard , 2017 was a year in which global economic loss was $344 Billion. Of that loss, 97% was due to weather related events. These events included several Caribbean hurricanes and a number of typhoons that hit China and Australia. Insured losses added up to $134 Billion.
Losses in the US were mainly as a result of hurricanes ($80B), tornados and wildfires ($14B) mostly in California.
Aside from the economic loss, natural disasters accounted for the loss of about 10,000 lives with the most tragic even being the loss of more than 1,100 due to a landslide in Sierra Leone.
